Family Boat Building!

Join professional small boat designer Dave Gentry for a week of fun and discovery at the Long Island School of Wooden Boat Building. Spouses, kids, grandkids, parents, friends or just yourself - all are welcome to join in as we build tough, but ultralight skin-on-frame Chuckanut 12 kayaks. You supply the effort, we supply all the parts needed, plus expert instruction to guide your hand throughout the week. You'll not only get to go home with your own boat, but also with the satisfaction and pride in being able to say "I built it myself!"

The Chuckanut kayaks are recreational style boats, designed for stability, comfort and relaxed use. You can choose either the classic Chuckanut 12 or the slimmer Chuckanut 12"S". Both Chuckanuts are easy to build, user friendly, fun to paddle, fast, capacious and track straight, while still being very maneuverable. At  25-30lbs, their ultra light weight makes car-topping a Chuckanut a breeze, and their large cockpits and wide range of stability are comfortable and confidence inspiring.

What's skin-on frame? It's a construction style - in use for thousands of years - that consists of a wooden skeleton (the frame) covered by a fabric skin. Even primitive SOF boats were tough enough for the brutal conditions of the Arctic, and our modern versions are even better. Skin boats are indeed tough enough for you or your kids, and the Chuckanuts are stable enough that even novice paddlers can enjoy them.

The popular Chuckanut 12 is 12 feet long, by 30 inches wide {3.66m x 76cm}, and weighs about 26lbs {12kg}. Maximum recommended capacity is 225lbs {102kg}.

With a 27" {68cm} beam, the Chuckanut 12"S" is slightly narrower than the standard C12. She's a bit less stable, but faster, and easier to paddle for smaller folks.
Maximum recommended capacity is 200lbs {91kg}.
